For us, no Insta feed is quite as captivating as that of a makeup artist’s and Pat McGrath’s is in a league of its own. Affectionately referred to as “Mother” by fans, the love that radiates from McGrath’s community and the respect for her artistry is unparalleled.
We’re regularly blessed with behind-the-scenes footage of her in action backstage and on site, which gives us a hands-on look at her techniques used for application when we go to try out the products on ourselves.
McGrath’s known flair for the dramatics came into play in a major way when teasing her namesake brand’s latest launch. Old Hollywood visuals where bold lips were the star of the show graced her feed, a savvy move due to the universal appeal these film icons of the past still maintain today, as well as the statement-making shades they wore on their lips.
When it comes to launch time, we’re back in the present taking in the way makeup looks (and techniques) have evolved, but lipstick is still a key part of every single look in order to provide that major emphasis and dramatic finishing touch.
The aspirational element of Pat McGrath Lab’s line is important to note here. It brings the world of high fashion, editorial, runway, and makeup artistry of the highest quality right to the consumer’s fingertips and McGrath personally shows you how to use every item on her feed.
It’s easy to feel a connection to the founder. And Pat is just so loved.
The makeup legend has what even the best marketing budgets can’t buy: natural talent and authenticity.
McGrath had her breakthrough as a professional makeup artist in the early 1990s with i-D magazine and she’s since become known as the most prolific runway makeup artist of all time.
Knowing all too well the way women with deeper skin tones have been severely underserved by the beauty industry, she became an expert at mixing product in order to achieve a perfect shade match, ultimately winning over supermodels who demanded her at jobs as a result.
Naomi Campell once told Vogue “I was so happy to work with a makeup artist of color because there weren’t many at the time. Moving forward, I wanted to work with her on everything I possibly could.”
For those who have had the privilege of having McGrath work on them, they often expressed the complete feeling of trust to just sit back and let her do her magic. This is also something that the artist has carried over into the formulations at Pat McGrath Labs - products should be magnificent and usable. It’s not an either/or.
With the launch of her Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil collection, McGrath set out to create an assortment of lip colors that inspired the user with their multi-functional capacity and ease of application.
According to McGrath, she “developed the Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil to inspire your creativity at home. It has the intense pigment and lush texture of a lipstick, but the tapered, pencil-like tip gives you both precision and the opportunity to play. Use it as a traditional lipstick, or let your imagination run wild with bold lip designs.”
