Getting to the Root of Natural Haircare

Derived from the word "rudiment," a new natural haircare brand has arrived utilizing the earth's "basic elements" to formulate its products to be free from harsh and harmful chemicals in order to development universal options for all. Founded by Shivam Chhagan, Rootiment utilizes the appropriate tagline to sum up its brand ethos: "Haircare powered by nature."

The sustainable self-care brand "harnesses all natural ingredients" to help consumers with a variety of concerns including hair and beard growth, damage, and overall to help boost confidence.

"I noticed I started shedding hair in my early 20s, which can be common amongst young men, but I was not the only one," says Chhagan. "I had a few friends and family members experiencing the same issues, but we would all use different products from retailers including Minoxidil and barely noticed any improvements, if any."

After further experimentation, Chhagan discovered that opting for products with ingredients typically harsh on both hair and the scalp, he felt wary due to the lack of research easily available regarding benefits, and even more alarmingly, potential side effects.

"It occurred to me that in my family we use a lot of ancient remedies to treat colds, skin, etc. so I began to research what natural ingredients can help with hair quality improvement. I also found that certain plants such as Rosemary and Thyme have science-backed publications showing how beneficial they can be to aid hair growth."

"I also understand [that] a lot of young men and women tend to shed hair at a much earlier age, which led me to believe that my products could work for millions of people," he adds.

As the Rootiment founder transitioned into a cleaner, more sustainable lifestyle for himself, he also became more intentional with the products he chose to use on his body on top of what he consumed in his diet.

"Over the past few years, I realized maintaining a clean hair care routine is beneficial, especially with how quickly hair can shed, dry, and thin. The way I look at hair care is similar to how I look at my diet; making sure I am consuming clean foods with ingredients we can pronounce," Chhagan explains.

"Basically, if you are hesitant on consuming a certain food because of its ingredients, the same approach should be applied for products that you apply on your skin or hair and that is the mentality that I have been maintaining and trying to advocate for as consumers become more aware of my brand," he adds.

When Chhagan first brought Rootiment to market, he began with the launch of his oil, which he considers to be a staple for everyone's hair routine. This plant-powered Hair Care Oil is positioned as an "all-in-one" multi-beneficial product that addresses a variety of hair and scalp concerns.

"As an accessory, I also added the scalp massager, which is a biodegradable silicone brush with soft bristles that are designed to help spread the oil evenly and massage the scalp to stimulate blood flow. It is a versatile and common tool that can be used during wash day or just to massage your scalp."

Rootiment also offers a derma roller with 540 microneedles, which provides stimulation to support regrowth on the head and face.

"Lastly, we sell our Hair Hydrating Tonic, which is all water-based mist and extremely convenient to use. It was tailored for those [who] lack shine in their hair or tend to have dry, frizzy hair."

All Rootiment products are manufactured in-house. The brand sources natural ingredients from ethical suppliers across the world.

"Through numerous trials, we were able to curate the perfect formulas for the hair care oil and hair hydrating tonic. Once we have all the supplies in house, we create batches based off orders so each bottle is made relatively fresh and they are shipped out almost immediately," the founder shares.

"It is important to note that all of our products are hand-poured, so the quality control process is very detailed to make sure every bottle is created up to our standards."

"We don't claim to be 100% natural -- we are 100% natural," Chhagan says.

He explains that while many brands utilize this marketing tactic to draw in an audience, the full ingredient list often conflicts with what's being said.

"We pride ourselves in being completely transparent with what we offer and in a crowded market like like the hair care industry. It is extremely important to be transparent with our consumers, so trust can be built."

Rootiment seeks to be a true brand that is about more than just selling products. Ultimately, the goal is to create an entire culture around the positivity the brand promotes ranging from diet, lifestyle, sleep habits, and other ways people can improve their every day lives.

"We strongly believe in helping others with our products and we feel like our purpose is greater than just being an online store," Chhagan explains.

Key Product Differentiators:

  • 100% Organic, Vegan & Ayurvedic

  • Paraben-free, Cruelty-free & Phthalate-free

  • Not sold on Amazon or other 3rd party sellers

  • Made fresh based on the orders they receive

  • Capabilities to create custom batches to cater to allergies

According to Chhagan, "building a brand is about being patient and consistent, similar to the process of improving the quality of your hair. This is a venture that started off with creating an oil that could help people, but I realized there is such a huge market for those struggling with maintaining their hair quality."

The Rootiment founder shares that he feels blessed to be able to provide a solution that he truly believes in, as well as sharing the benefits that helped him on his own haircare journey.

"The biggest step of this process was understanding [if] this product [would] help people with similar issues. Once the feedback started pouring in, it gave me a boost to keep growing and learning about common hair struggles [in order] to understand the next products I can create."

So what's next for the brand?

Rootiment will be launching a brand new oil developed specifically for beard care soon and next year plans to bring to market a protective hair serum. We had the opportunity to test out the oil and can happily say that this one is Beauty Brief-approved.
